The .lck files referenced earlier (see attached image) are not being deleted after shutting down Aptana Studio, which is probably why derby doesn't work again on restart.

I'm not able to reproduce it, but I have seen it happen multiple times. It's not due to the data navigator. Perhaps a failed rake task?
